IF your TV can do it better than your DVD player, then said DVD player is a waste of time. If the chip in your upconverting DVD player can do it better than your TV, then the picture will look better. This requires a chip that can, on the fly, do a nice pretty scale of 30 of these images per second, doing stuff like deinterlacing, pulldown and smooth upscaling. ![]() One of the two components has to take the native 720x480 image that is encoded on the DVD and magically scale it up to the native resolution of the display device. I have the Philips DVP642 for a couple of years now and it's a workhorse. IF there are no benefits, the PHILIP DVDP3910 at Walmart looks classier for $49. If all LCD TV upconverts, what benefit does an upconverter player give you?
